MAGNOX PIONEERS INNOVATIONS IN WASTE MANAGEMENT

Magnox, EnergySolutions (Magnox’ s parent body organization), and the NDA have developed and implemented an optimized approach to the decommissioning of the Magnox sites known as the Magnox Optimised Decommissioning Programme (MODP). The programme sets out what the business will deliver over the comprehensive spending review period, including pioneering innovative ways of working, accelerating Bradwell and Trawsfynydd sites to a state of care and maintenance, and carrying out safe and efficient cleanup. Other sites have also received additional funding to accelerate some decommissioning projects. Acceleration of work on key sites is counter balanced by a reduction in scope or deferred demolition across other parts of the programme. The MODP offers a savings of about £1.3 billion from the original Magnox decommissioning strategy.

AFFORDABLE DUST COLLECTION FOR HAND DEMOLITION TOOLS: A Look at What is Available for the D&D Professional

Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) have been slow to embrace dust collection for the majority of these tools despite heavy pressure from Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulators. It is only with the recent addition of another layer of enforcement, the Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) rule, that the major tool manufacturers have begun to offer effective dust collection for their tools. These dust collectors vary in efficiency and ease of use, and add to the cost of the tool. INFRARED CAMERAS Provide Threefold Bonus For Nuclear Decommissioning

One of the most novel industries where infrared cameras have proved particularly valuable and cost effective is nuclear decommissioning. Engineers in Idaho are using them to provide process feedback and monitor safety as residual sodium is removed from the primary vessel and cooling loops of the sodium-cooled Experimental Breeder Reactor-II (EBR-II). Infrared cameras provide images of infrared radiation, or heat energy, which is otherwise invisible to the unaided eye. Infrared radiation is part of the electromagnetic spectrum, which includes visible light. But unlike visible light, infrared has wavelengths longer than the human eye can detect.

ENERGY SPENT IN DECOMMISSIONING

Quite recently, I was taken aback when somebody asked me about the energy (e.g. Mwh or Petajoules, PJ) spent to demolish a NPP, and the innuendo was that the decommissioning-related energy could be comparable with the construction of the same NPP, and even to the energy generated by that plant. I must admit I had no answer to offer on the spot. And yet, I realized soon that this is an argument used at times by the anti-nuclear groups. Was this really a loaded question?
