Sellafield Ltd Welcomes Government Report on UK’s ‘Nuclear Future’

The report ‘The UK’s Nuclear Future’ has been published by HM Government following consultation with industry experts including Sellafield Ltd’s own deputy managing director George Beveridge. It will be taken forward by a new Nuclear Industry Council.

In the report, Secretary of State for Business Vince Cable and Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Ed Davey, set out how the UK’s nuclear industry can work with Government to deliver an industry strategy to support UK growth. As part of this the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and UK Trade and Investment will help businesses in the UK promote their capabilities internationally.

The Nuclear Industrial Strategy is part of a series of industrial strategies across a number of sectors to be published by the Government and co-created by industry. It says that huge opportunities lie ahead, with around £930 billion of investment planned globally to build new reactors, on top of the £250 billion of decommissioning work.

Part of the purpose of the plan is to ensure that the UK has the necessary skills for the future, both for new nuclear development and to complete the decommissioning program – which is largely focused on Sellafield.

Mr Beveridge said: “I was delighted to be invited to contribute to the development of what will prove an important document for our industry.

“The challenges we face at Sellafield are globally unique and the government recognises this – which is why they are investing in the work we are doing to successfully clean up and decommission the UK’s nuclear legacy. This provides a key platform for our supply chain and local companies to grow their businesses nationally and internationally. Of course it also helps position the Sellafield workforce and West Cumbria for new missions. Growing skills and capability across the sector will be a key focus for the new Nuclear Industry Council.”
